Moon uncooperative this month
Friday morning was kind of a blowout at the Garden of the Gods. The sunrise just didn't happen in time for the moonset. I -did- like Mel's interpretation (posted earlier), though.

Went down there again Saturday morning, but too overcast. Fellow photographer, Adam Lechnir, and I spent a little time there shooting some B&W images of the rocks - then decided to check out North Cheyenne Canyon. Turns out that was the right decision on a day like that. More pictures to follow...

Rivers, waterfalls and forests are always better taken during overcast weather to avoid blowing out highlights. Here's a classic taken in North Cheyenne Canyon (County Park). There are numerous spots like this along the main roadway. There was actually a bit of fall color left along the lower portions of the canyon.

This last shot is Helen Hunt Falls, about three miles up the canyon. Be sure to use your polarizer on shots like this and the river above, as there is a surprising amount of reflections from the rocks - especially the rock wall of the falls. The 5D was set to "cloudy" white balance for both these shots to warm them up a bit.

Ken,

You're right on the money. North Cheyenne Canyon was my original destination on Saturday, but radar patterns told me that I could probably get above the cloud deck. If I'd had the time though, I would have stopped by Cheyenne Canyon on my way back down.

I like all three of the shots you've posted here.
