For you Canon shooters, and you know who you are...............
Two new EF lenses for 2008
Worldwide
Canon has taken the unusual step of announcing the development of two new lenses well in advance of their launch.
The EF 200mm f/2L IS USM and EF 800mm f/5.6L IS USM are both L-series lenses incorporating a high-performance Image Stabilizer. They also feature optical systems utilizing special materials such as fluorite to correct chromatic aberrations, giving high-resolution, high-contrast shooting performance.
The EF 200mm f/2L IS USM, targeting users who seek a brighter lens for portraiture and indoor sports photography, has a large aperture of f/2.
The EF 800mm f/5.6L IS USM, expected to deliver telephoto performance surpassing the current top-of-the-line EF600mm f/4L IS USM super telephoto lens, is being developed in response to requests from users working in the fields of sports and news photography who are looking for a high-performance lens that offers a longer focal length.
As these new lenses are currently under development, pricing and availability information are not yet available.
Now...........how do I finance these............

Maybe an impossible dream, but wouldn't a 200-500 f4 be the cat's meow???

Yep, it'll be nice stuff, for sure.
I'd settle for an upgrade of the 100-400L IS. Even nothing more than giving it the newer-generation IS would be great. Not that I'm complaining about the lens as it is, mind you. It has its limitations, but so do we all.

200mm portrait lens? You would need a studio the size of a barn! Can you imagine what the price is going to be on the 800 f/5.4? I'd say north of $10k USD. Add to that the cost of the mule you'll need to carry it...
The 100-400L IS is my favorite lens. I always thought that an upgrade to a straight F4 would be fantastic, but with Ned mentioning a 200-500L IS F4, that would be unbelievable! That lens together with the 70-200L IS F2.8, would make for a fantastic combo!

Gene, I'm looking at buying the 100-400L IS. Is this lens well sealed against the elements? I'll be carrying it on long hikes outdoors in winter and I've already had my Sigma 28-300 fog up from the cold where my stock Canon 17-55 hasn't had problems.

I had heard that the 100-400mm was prone to dust invasion due to it being a push-pull lens. This is the main reason that I have never bought one. But I do get to try one out next week during the wolf shoot!

The 100-400 gets a bad rap as a so-called "dust magnet" because it's a push-pull. I've shot mine heavily in all seasons (95 degrees to -35) and all weathers for more than 4 years, and there is only a small amount of dust inside the lens after all this time, but hardly any, and it has no impact on IQ. I never assume any lens is really well sealed, even the L series, so when it's rainy or snowy I always put on a camo PVC rain sleeve I built myself. It's the only real way to fully camo a push-pull zoom, anyway, since lens coats can't be put on the lens barrel.

Actually, the weight of the 800 f5.6 should be in the vicinity of the 600 f4. The front element will probably even be smaller (800/5.6 = 143, vs 150 for the 600). I've seen a few internet rumors that the cost will be around that of the 600 as well, but I regard those as just that, rumors.
