Very cool shot, I've been wanting to check out this park for awhile.

Nice shot. This looks like another place I need to visit in the UP. My son will be attending Michigan Tech next year so I'm told by my wife that we will be making quite a few trips to the UP.

Looks like a cool place to shoot. What's the story with all of the pilings? They look like they've been through a lot.

The site was an old iron smelting town with a busy port back in the mid-to-late 1800's.

That's pretty good color for the U.P. in late October, Andy!

The late October color up here was mostly from white birch and tamarack, both of which are shown in this image along with the cedars.

I was surprised that there was a much foliage still on there. From what I could see, most of the "so-called" hardwood trees in the area were the white birch, which still had strong color. Most of the other species were bare. I have always wanted to visit this site. Behind me is the old smelting operation building, complete with a brick furnace. The site has been maintained as a state park and there are a number of old buildings there. The harbor is still operational and there are docks. It is very small. Hard to imagine the boats that would have brought the ore in there, or the iron out.

Philip - I live in Saginaw. My wife's family is in the Washington D.C. area. I once calculated that the distance from Saginaw to Houghton and from Saginaw to Northern Virginia is very close to the same! In one direction, we travel through 5 states. In the other, 1 (well, maybe two in some peoples mind  ).

We spent about half a day there. Worth the trip down the "Garden Peninsula"
