This week, the Grand Mesa, Gunnison and Uncompahgre
National Forests finally released their long denied
hit list of picnic sites, campgrounds and trailheads.

The list can be viewed at:

Great.

Having just recently found out that the concessionaire that runs the Rampart Reservoir site does not honor the America the Beautiful pass, I'm really excited about the idea of the FS trying to attract more concessionaires.

Timberline Overlook: Decommission. Ah yes, because we all know how expensive it is to keep a 100-yard-long road with a great view of Uncompahgre open.

None of this makes sense. The problem lies in a top-heavy bureaucracy, as is usually the case with govt.

Um, Mel... Do you mean the Federal Recreational Lands Pass? If so, I believe the concessionaires are required by Federal law to accept it; that's why Brainard started accepting passes this year.

Yes, the same pass.

This site here indicates that senior Federal Land Pass holders (aka America the Beautiful) may receive a 50% discount. It does not specify any discount for FLP holders and the concessionaire at the booth was going to charge me $5 to enter the last time I was there on the premise that they are a private concessionaire. I believe he was in the wrong in this case, but I'm not certain. They do offer an annual pass to Rampart Reservoir and Manitou Lakes for some amount. Both are "run" by the same concessionaire.

Sigh. I guess it's not as bad as turning over large portions of park management to the various Indian tribes and exempting them from oversight or corrective action. That bill (HR3994) is currently in committee.
