I was wondering if I could get some suggestions from the forum. I have some time off tomorrow afternoon / evening and wanted to get out and get some sunset shots. Can you recommend somewhere fairly close to Denver (an hour or so would be nice)?

Thanks,
Bert

Bert,

Loveland Pass would be a good option.

Any specific area I should head towards? Just FYI, don't know much about Loveland Pass.

Thanks,
Bert

Might be time to buy a map, my friend. If somebody suggests Loveland Pass, Google it. Or go to topozone.com. This is coming off in a scolding tone, I know, but I really don't mean it that way. I'm just trying to help you out.

Just drive west on I-70 to the Highway-6 turn-off a few miles before you reach the Eisenhower Tunnel (Loveland ski area shares the Hwy-6 exit) and drive up to the pass (I think it's about 5 miles.). If there's not too much snow in the parking lot just south of the pass on the righthand side of the road, park there and walk south a few hundred yards to some (probably frozen) tarns.

Another great sunset location is Guanella Pass. Take the Georgetown exit and follow the signs to the pass, It's 14 miles from town to the pass on good dirt road.

Todd,
I completely understand the tone. However, in my defense I'm one of those anal retentive people who like to know exactly where they are going if they've never been there before. I have a few maps and the red Atlas but my horrible sense of direction <always> lets me down. At least I know the mountains are west :)
Appreciate the directions. I know where Loveland Pass is but didn't know if there was a certain area that would be better than others. I'll check out the area you suggested.
Maybe if I have time before work on Sunday I'll check out Guanella Pass. Last time I went up there the weather wasn't too good.
Again, I understand the firm stance. After re-reading my reply I would have responded the same.

Thanks again,
Bert

Check on Guanella with the Forest Service or Georgetown information center - I think they may be closing it for the winter now. :frown:

Clouds are firmly above the mountaintops, at least up here in Gilpin right now; no trick getting above the cloud cover today... Loveland Pass would be my recommendation if you're set to go and ready for either a brief bit of loving Sun or disappointment tonight.

Sky is clearing up here now. Good luck tonight!
