South African Pied Kingfisher with fish
I have been going through some of the many pictures that I took this year. I am not sure about this one so I am sending up for comments. I took the picture through the reeds hence the green showing up. I would welcome as many comments as possible as that is the only way an amateur like myself can improve.

Canon 20D

f/5.00
some cropping to take away some of the reeds

I guess it's one of those situations where you have to take what's given Dave. The light has not been helpful and I think you've handled that well. Those reeds do unfortunately spoil the final result. Great birds to watch especially when they're hovering. Huge beak for such a small bird.

Perhaps a crop along these lines might work better Dave :wavey:

Not perfect but you get the idea.

Thanks Andy yours does improve. I was not sure whether to make the image to big within a close crop. I guess it will just come with experience.

I'd have gone with the crop, thase reeds were just too much.

Very nice looking kingfisher Dave, yep I also agree with Andy's crop. Also I think the light bits on the bottom left of the tree trunk are quite distracting so I would tempted to try tone them down.

I also think the suggested crop works well. Tristan

I too prefer Andy's cropping idea. Cool looking bird. Was this handheld?

It was taken on a bean bag from a 4 x 4 but ground very uneven. Trying to find a spot where I could see the bird through the reeds was testing to say the least. All the time you are hoping it is not going to fly off.
