I just love dark broody and unpredictable weather. Does this not work for anyone or any nits? Tristan

I might be tempted to lighten the sky a little - it is a little distracting. Other than that, superb shot.

Thanks Andrew, I've lightened the sky a little - I get carried away too easily with dark skies. Tristan

Another point is, that you need a rocky shore. And with only 43 km of Slovenian shore...., oh well I'll stick with mountains. Lots of those around .

I like it Tristan. Wave action is great and those foreground rocks are fantastic. I like blurry sky too. It's a good backdrop for foreground action. A prefect photo for B&W.

Cheers,
Marko

Beautiful shot, great composition, very moody. I love the way the eye gets led around the shot, the way the rocks in the foreground add interest and the how the clouds bring the eye in from the top. I would have been interested to see the shot with a shorter exposure to give a little detail to the sea, for comparison.

I personally would bring down the contast a little more, but I am usually in the minority on that point

Well done, excellent work as usual.

lovely photo. I might have included more of the action lower left and put the distant mountains more right of centre. moody and atmospheric capturing the mystery of the place.
good work Tristan.

My question would have been 'does this NOT work for anyone!' Landscape isn't really my thing so I can't add to the pertinent remarks above but at face value I really like it.

Marko - your mountains don't half make up for any lack of coastline!
Paul - good point on shorter exposure, I was working fast and did not have chance to try everything before it was completely dark. This was taken well after sunset.
Peter - I have a few variations with the shoreline pebbles as the foreground but use of the big rock upfront makes this a little different to me and gives (me personally) a feel for what is was like (stumbling around in the dark trying not to slip or be hit by a wave...)
David - I've amended the question as reasons why it doesn’t work or nits are absolutely exactly what I'm looking for.
Thanks, Tristan

What a belter! This is certainly an example B&W in full effect. I think the sea sky and rocks are in harmony here. I love long coastal exposures even though they are not to everyones tastes. Its an unorthadox composition, the way the sea is sliding to the left, the centrally postioned island in the middle and the foreground rocks being so dominating yet not uncomfortably close. I really like the water detail around the pebbles in the bottom left, it really is

Have you split toned this Tristan? It looks wonderfully inky black.

Cracking shot, I am very impressed with this!!

Glad you like it David - I was really pleased with the comp but I bodged the exposure a bit as it is actually quite under exposed. This is a simple greyscale image - I don't know how to do a split tone. Do you mean use the duotone image mode?

Tristan,

Wonderful image. Only slight problem for me is that the dark cloud at the top centre is slightly too monotonal. I'd like slightly more detail in it but then again I'd also like half your landscape skill

Thanks for sharing

Wonderful range of tones. I like the clarity and detail amidst the haze. All of the different textures compliment each other.

Certainly looks fine to me from an untrained eye Tristan. Very nice work again :toast:
