Some time after the first of the year I will be adding a second tripod I am looking at the Gitzo GT 3540 LS. Question is which head to put on it? I am currently using a Markins Q 10 and like it a lot. However with the new set up I will use a side kick to get gimble capability. So, I was wondering which would be the better choice between the Markins Q 20 or the Really Right Stuff B 55? The RRS price is about $50 more so if the Q 20 were equivalent saving the $$ would be nice.
To give you the weight details the heaviest combo I will be using is a Canon 1D Mark II and 1D Mark III with a 500 F4 & 2 X TC $ Flash with Better Beamer.
I can't give a comparison since I've never used a Markins, but my BH55 works great with the same camera/lens combinations you're planning on using. My BH55 also has the lever rather than screw clamp which I really like. That said I'm sure you would be happy with the Markins as well.

Like Keith, I can't comment on the Markins, but I am super happy with my BH55. Incredibly smooth, and it locks down like a vise using only a wee bit of pressure. Superb craftmanship. I love the lever clamp as well; very quick and very secure. I've heard great things about Markins too, so this is probably a win/win situation.

Simply looking at my BH55 makes me happy I bought it. I like nice tools and it's a dang nice tool!

I am using the Markins Q M-20 and I love it. It is the best ballhead I've had. It is light, the controls are smooth, and the setting stays in place. You may need to buy a plate to match your camera/lens.
Markins claims the maximum load is 100 lbs.
