Taken a while ago, but I have been trying some different sharpening techniques. This looks the better method so far, but my CRT doesn't show artifacts as well as TFT's/LCDs I don't think.
Technically it's not great as it was underexposed quite a bit and the DOF is inadequate for a bird with this long tail! could have gone to 400 iso but the noise would have been horrendous this underexposed. Hoping i'll get some more opportunities this year so I can nail these properly!!
I'd be grateful on any feedback with the sharpening..or anything else really

Looks sharp where it matters Graeme
Not too sure about all the space at the top though.
I doubt there's an aperture on a 500 small enough to pull the tail in with the bird sitting at that angle to the camera Graeme
I don't know about your area, but up here they've had a cracking time breeding, I don't think I've ever seen so many before

Techs are all right and as Andy wrote, it would be impossible to get this bird sharp from beak to end of the tail with either lens at this magnification. They surely are lovely subject to photograph.

Can't help with the first paragraph - might as well be in Chinese I'm afraid but it's a nice image and background is superb.

Looks good here, are you going to share your new sharpening techniques?

Nicely crisp/detailed Shot Graeme, and the bg colour sets this little chap off perfectly

Hi Graeme,
Nice shot , OOF tail doesn't bother me and the BG is very nice indeed.

I might do Brian depending on people's opinions, obviously I need to play with it a bit more as there's limited DOF and I could do with getting a better image to play with. I don't have a lot of time at the moment for playing so will include processing in my next post.
Thanks for the comments

Lovely subdued lighting works well here, in focus where it matters, and complementary perch and BG.
Looks fine to me and the sharpening appears to be good for web viewing.... agree with tristan it does need just a slight lift in the brightness + perhaps just a tad too much room at the top, still a great shot....

Looks very good to me Graeme - bags of detail, the oof tail doesn't matter. Would agree needs to be just a bit brighter.
