Anyone want to go to coyote buttes this weekend? I have an extra permit for both units. I will be doing the north unit on saturday, south on sunday and north again on monday.

Yes, very much so.

But my wife would kill me if I didn't finish painting the kitchen before Thanksgiving. :frown:

Hope someone can make it down there with you.

I'd love to, but I couldn't make it down there on a regular-sized weekend. :frown:

Enjoy your trip (and whoever you can find to go with you...).

Hey Adam,
Thanks for the open invite...sorry I cannot make it. I diid the North and South units last week. Camped in the Cottonwood Cove area. All was great until the morning. I woke up to a dead battery...Yikes! I don't think this area is covered by AAA.

Luckily Monte Trumbull was with us in his car and we were able to jump my car and get it started. Taught me a lesson to make sure I have an alternate battery source when venturing way off road like that. My car is a '07 Yukon XL and to my knowledge I did not leave the lights on or anything else overnight...go figure! That's a long walk out of there.

Hi Adam, well same song as the rest here just a different verse. But can you tell me about this place? Where is it, what is it like? I enjoy checking out new places so will have to plan a trip there. Enjoy!

John, just google Coyote Buttes, or the Wave or Vermilion Cliffs. Its a fantastic area of gnarled and swirling sandstone, my favorite place in the southwest. A lot of the recent ESS images are from there.

This is one of those places that really deserves a Hot Spot article; between the details of the area and the complexity of the permit process, there's a lot to be written that would help out folks like John (and me, too - never had the chance to get there...).

Adam,
A consideration for the South Unit. On my trip there last week I took the jeep road that is 19.9 miles South on House Rock Rd from Hwy 89 (there is a old corral on the right going Sourh on House Rock at 19.9 miles). Due to lack of rain in the area the deep sand areas of the jeep roads in that area are especially suseptable to getting stuck. If yo go the normal way of turning off House Rock Rd and go towards Paw Hole then to Poverty Ranch then to the Cottonwood Cove there is a lot of uphill in deep sand areas going that way. If you go the way I mention above there is not as much uphill and a much lessser chance of getting stuck. On the way out you can go the Poverty Ranch-Paw Hole route. Not so bad going down hill.
