Roaring Fork Fall

Hello everyone! Been a while since I posted an image around here that wasn't part of a monthly theme! Figured it was about time.

I got out for two quick trips this Fall, the first one a great, wet weekend to the Aspen area. First morning was a clear one at the Bells, followed by a pretty nice day that eventually turned to some awesome rain. Next day was at the Bells again, but this time, no Bells. Completely socked in. That's OK, because the rainy conditions led to some awesome shooting later. Took hours to actually get down the Maroon Bells Road.

On the drive home, of course much later than I had planned because the shooting was so good, I was headed up Hwy 82 and Independence Pass. Not too far past the turn off to Lincoln Creek road, a flash of orange caught my eye, an I had to investigate! I finally found a tight spot to turn around, and a place to pull over. It was raining lightly at this point, and all the trees and rocks were almost glowing. I hiked the 30-40 yards back to the Roaring Fork, and found my flash of orange, a nice large bush across the creek. Only problem was the bushes on my side of the creek went right up to the edge, and finding a good, safe spot to shoot from proved a challenge.

I finally had to use a spot squeezed between two tall bushes. With the rain soaked rocks, and my almost smooth treads on my too old boots , it wasn't easy to get out there safely! I ended up making several trips, 4x5 body the first trip, a lens and a couple film holders the next! It must have been slightly comical to see.

Anyway, I shot quite a few compositions while there, both with 4x5 and digital. This was the first one I shot. I'll post a few more below. Thanks for looking!

Brent,
Great story and great shots! Really like the first one. Like the others also because of the creek and your composition there, but am just a little disconcerted about the orange bush cut-off at the top. I think I'd like to see a little more of the bush not cut off.

Wish I could have gotten out this year. . .maybe next time.

Brent, I hate Provia but I like the third shot!! It seems to have the most neutral color balance in the water (easy to adjust for sure, but the first two seem a tad too magenta). The third shot also seems the most dynamic and I love the sculpted rock.

Brent, I really like that first one. I think its the best of the bunch comp, color and contrast wise. The other two are nice, but the cut off bush keeps taking me out of the image.

Thanks for sharing.

Very nice stuff. I remember looking at these over at the lab.

Nice shots, Brent. I like the comp and colors of the 1st, but at least on this (uncalibrated) monitor the highlites seem a bit strong in the leaves.
