I received the P-5000 and can confirm that it accepts external hard drives. As stated by one of you both the Epson and the external hard drive have to be connected to electrical power. Some of the light USB-powered mobile external hard drives accept an external AC cable adapter but the cable has to be purchased in a specialist shop (e.g. Maplin). I now have the Epson P-5000 (80 GB) plus two external hard drives (Freecom, 160 GB each), I will download the memory cards to the Epson and then backup twice using the hard drives. The images in the hard drives can be browsed, magnified, selected, deleted, etc. All this without the need of a laptop. Be warned that some external hard drives do not have a port for AC connection despite saying so in the package and that some rude managers at Currys will not return your money.

Thanks for the info Javier.

They must refund your money - inform them that the goods where 'unfit for the purpose for which they where sold' and that if he won't take them back, you'll involve trading standards... if it says it has external power connectors on the packaging and doesn't then it is misrepresenting the goods... again, the manufacturer can be prosecuted...
