I'm currently going through hundreds of images for a slideshow I'm doing this week on my travels down under, hence the Australian theme in my last few posts.
I really like how this one has turned out taking into account that I'd never really had any experience of night photography using a flash. Plus this was taken handheld as my tripod had broken a short while before.
Anyhoo this was taken in northern Queensland on a campsite we were staying at and there happened to be quite a few of these fellas calling and whatnot right outside our campervan. So with my wife shining a torch so I could at least see what I was aiming at I managed to get this one decent shot.
Converted from raw. I've added a bit of canvas to the right to give it a bit more balance and cropped a bit off the top. I guess a bit more dof would have been nice but the face/eyes are very sharp indeed, that EF-S 60mm macro is one sharp lens!! I'm also guessing that some of you might suggest a bit more room at the bottom might be a good idea and when I've time I might have a go at adding some.

Flash has worked well here Paul to bring out the skin texture - nice comp and your PS process has balanced the image nicely

When I first browsed though this on my laptop I have to admit that it didn't really work for me, but now I've seen it on a full size screen I've had to change my mind pretty quickly! Really great use of flash, texture is amazing, and it has that in your face quality which really works with the smaller stuff. Very, very nice.

A great portrait, even though the light is a bit hard the shot definately sings with character.
