An individual contacted me and requested a high-res copy of a picture in order to make an 11 x 14" print. I am not a professional photographer. Can someone with some experience give me some guidance on what is fair in a situation like this?
Price? Is it OK to just send them a TIFF file to print? Are there licensing arrangements to consider? I posted in the photo marketing forum but thought I'd get a quicker response here.
Thanks in advance.

Larry,

I certainly would never send anyone a TIFF file without:

1)Determine what they need It for. If it's for a print, I would suggest to them that you will print it for you and charge you " x $$.

2) Check around other photo'g web sites to see what you may think is a fair price for the print.
(Based on weather you are printing it or if you are sending it out to get printed.... I certainly can't charge as much as a well known nature photographers, but I think my prices are fair.

My bottom line is unless they want to pay you a lot of $$$ for the image ( and get it in writing) I, for one would never send out a file without a licence agreement or compensation.

Lots of information on this kind of subject as well as most of the forms commonly used can be found in John Shaw's book "The Business of Nature Photography".
Good luck.

Personally, I wouldn't do it that way. You have no way of knowing if they're going to make one print or a hundred prints (Christmas is right around the corner). I would either do the print yourself or have it done at a local lab and sell the print. Figure out what it will cost you, including shipping, and mark it up appropriately.

I was contacted like this once before by an individual requesting an electronic file so they could do their own print. I gave them a price for a print of my own manufacture, and never heard a word back. I definitely would not give away an electronic copy if the image meant anything to me...

Thank you. This is the advice I was looking for. If anything, I will make the print and send it to them.
