Over in general discussion, posted a question on whether 40D or 5D would be the best move on a second body. I've been shooting my 20D and love it. If I got a 40D I could add a lens, if 5D the equipment budget would be blown... I would love to hear opinions from Pac NW members. Thanks all.

I also agonized about the 40D vs. the 5D decision. I also have a 20D which has given me several years of good service with minimal issues. I purchased the 40D because of the sensor clean, 14 bit Analog to digital conversion and the live view. I am happy with the performance, based on 800+ pics. The battery does seem woefully inadequate so would highly recommend that you by a spare. This is especially true if you use the Liveview much. Good luck on your decision.

The sensor clean and the sealed up body of the 40D appeal to me - features that the 5D doesn't have. The ability to take advantage of wide angle as in the 5D would be very nice. Hmmm.... pretty cool that this is the most difficult decision I'm making today.

I think the choice depends on what your priorities and needs are. Are you looking for more MP, or looking for a full-size sensor to faciltate more wide angle shooting? If you shoot wide a lot, then the extra expense of the 5D would be a good investment. I'm not very familiar with the Canon line and the features associated with a 20D and 40D, but if the major improvement is MP, it's only 2MP and I personally don't think that gets you much. I've always benefited from putting budget secondary and focusing (no pun intended!) on what I most want from a new camera; that's ensured that I don't end up wanting to upgrade again in 6 months which is a much more expensive proposition.

Good luck! Like you said, Not a bad decision to be struggling with!

I'd go 40D. The anti-dust/water sealing (minimal but better than 5D) are very appealing. You can replace the mirror screen and from images I've seen, the difference between a 5D and 40D shot are almost impossible to tell. I clean my 20D sensor more often than I would like. I won't ever buy another camera that requires me to clean the heart of the camera again.....
