My first attempt at these delightful little creatures. Taken on the Cromford Canal at 3:30 on Sunday afternoon in very poor light. I spent most of the day photographing Little Grebes and didn't come this chap until late on so only got a few grab shots of him.
Techs: E-510, 300/2.8 (no TC for a change ), ISO 800, 1/9th @ F4, -1.3EV fill flash. Full frame, cloned out a few bright spots on the RHS, USM.
Nice spikey wet-look hair-do. Never attempted a shot like this but I use flash a lot for people photos. I'd suggest moving the flash off camera if possible. Tristan
Good one, still afew 'bright' bits that need attention, and the flash looks like it could be reduced even further...
The sharpness is impressive for (if I read right) 1/9 of a sec...

Hi Paul, nice sharp image for shutter speed (if 1/9th is correct )
Image does look overflashed probably caused from the wet leaf reflections - tricky one to dial in correctly.
OT - Went to Calumet over lunchtime.........whatever you do, don't pick up and try the E-3 with the 300 lens and 1.4 tc, you will not want to give it back - the AF performance is chalk and cheese to anything I have tried in an Oly body to date - no need for SWD the lens just rocks as it is. Disappointingly we could not get the 300mm and new 2x tc combo to stop hunting indoors - the new Firmware issue affects the 300 as well as the reported 90-250mm issues
SWD 12-60 now that is one killer lens -if the 50-200 SWD lens is just as fast it will be .
Paul would have liked to see a lower POV if possible. He/she has a touch of 'Clarence' about them. If you are old enough to know who Clarence was!

Stephen,
Who could forget Clarence the cross-eyed lion from Daktari Does that age me LOL?
Mike,
I'm banning myself from going anywhere near an E-3 until next Autumn I've had the EC-20 for nearly two weeks now and find it works well with the 300/2.8 in real-life outdoor situations. Performance seemed about the same before and after applying the latest firmware updates too.
Back to the subject of flash, do any of use you a flash diffuser when photographing wildlife?
