My better beamer has worked great for avian work but has been through some rough times and the plastic lens has developed some major cracks that are being held together with some (relatively) transparent tape. It still seeems to work ok but I'd like to replace it. I'm wondering if anyone is aware of a source to replace the lens without having to buy the whole BB package. Of course the way these things works the lens by itself is probably more expensive than the whole package.

Is that what you are talking about?

Kirk Enterprises sells an extender. Its called the Flash X-extender. I believe for the whole unit runs between 40-50$. There metal and fold down and last forever. Since they make a lot of their products they may have a lens that fits yours. 800 626 5074. Might be worth a try.

Great news for you. The lens for the "Better Beamer" is the HANDI-LENS by ULTRA-OPTIX. You can get information from

http://www.ultraoptix.com/Pages/handilens-fresnellens.html

I think the model of the lens is the HL-3. It retails for $11.95.

About 4 years ago, I ruined a lens when trying to glue the Velcro back on. Under a sticker which was stuck onto the case was the name. We had tried another fresnel lens, but it did not work. Then, my wife and fellow photographer found the Ultra-Optix web site. Besides Ultra-Oprix, several other web sites also offer the Handi-Lens. At the time, we ordered two, and I have just used the second so we need to order two more

WARNING: Be careful and get only the Hand-Lens by Ultra-Optix as the dimensions of the Better Beamer dictate its use as opposed to other fresnel lenses. As stated above, we learned the hard way by purchasing another lens at Barnes & Noble.

The Velcro was attached by a hot glue gun. I have successfully used thich-gel instant glue. Of the brands, I believe Krazy Glue Advanced Formula works the best at gluing plastics.

Thanks for the quick feedback. Lia's website is actually what I was looking for at $9.95 but David's HL-3 is listed for $3.00. It lacks the velcro strips which as David says should be relatively easy to add. I'll get one and give it a try.
