I suspect most of us actually use multiple hard drives, rather than DVDs or CDs. Optical media isn't considered that good an archival system. They're too easily scratched / damaged / etc. Plus, optical formats keep changing. What's to say 5 - 10 - 20 years down the road that one could still read the old formats? Having said that, disks, such as Mitsui (pointed out by Jesse) and eFilm (I believe) are considered some of the best optical media. Also, hard drives eventually fail, as well - so I replace the oldest of my three back-up drives one a year to be safe. You can probably do a search in this forum for additional discussions on image archiving techniques.
