[Belated] New Member Introduction
I came to birding late and to avian photography later. Birding in 1995 and avian photography during the course of a trip to the Galapagos with three professional photographers in February 2002. I've lived in Alaska for more than fifty years (excepting seven in college and post-grad school). It's a photographer's dream, but presents challenges in the winter. I meet those challenges by going somewhere else for a few weeks; in this shot, Corkscrew Sanctuary.

My wife Nancy and I share a passion for birds and birding. She is a biologist, raptor researcher, and the former director of Alaska Bird Observatory. And a terrific birder.

I'm still working on developing my portfolio, but have a few sales. Nancy and I contributed a few chapters to "A Birder's Guide to Alaska," something every birder and bird photographer needs to have before visiting the Great Land. If you plan to visit Alaska, get in touch.

NPN has taught me more about avian photography than I cold have ever imagined. Thanks to all for your help.

Welcome Jim and Nancy. I don't visit Avian very often, but perhaps you can shoot a few landscapes every now and then. If so, I hope to see you in ESS!

Welcome Jim. I'm curious how you handle reacclimating yourself to Fairbanks after spending two weeks in Florida? I don't like going to warm places in winter for that reason. (Plus I really love winter, at least most of the time.)

Thanks, everyone. It probably says more than I like that I posted more than a thousand comments, more than a hundred photos, and an article before getting around to introducing myself.

Just one of those sacrifices, I suppose. It's actually fairly easy. You can always put on more clothes to be warmer; there's a limit to how many you can take off to cool down.
