I am new at photography and trying to develop skills. For several years I have made a calendar as Christmas gifts for my family and friends. After my 2008 calendar was printed, the printer said they particularaly liked one print and may want to buy that photo from me to use for greeting cards they are considering as a product they sell in a card assortment package.
How would you, with experience, advise I charge for this. I don't want to give up complete rights to the photo. Seeking your advice.

I would not transfer rights. One-time, non-exclusive rights for this type of use is probably all the rights they need. fotoQuote gives a range between about $300 and $1000 for this use depending on the size of the print run (1,000 up to 100,000 or more). If they want exclusive rights for a year, then bump up your price 50 to 100%. If they later decide they want to use the image in other products (calendars, postcards, etc.) then those uses can be negotiated separately. A good way to start is to ask them what rights they need and how much they would expect to pay. If they say $40, then respond with a range that you feel is more appropriate. In my experience, if they are serious they will usually up their offer between the low and middle end of your range. If they don't then they weren't serious or they were hoping to get a screaming deal. If they say $1000 from the start, then you are good to go.

Thank you Sean. That gives me something to go on, and I will check out the web sight as well.
