see here

This seems to be a long and comprehensive article, I have only surface browsed it so far

Upshot seems to be, get your sub mirror fixed and new firmware loaded 'cos these do make the AF work better.......

.....but it doesn't seem to be the 100% resolution of the issue either

Have read it, and would say that both cameras (1D2n and 1D3) appear now to have both strenghts and weakness - one is not overly better than the other - just different.

I have to admit that I suspect that what is written about the strengths and weakness of the modified/fixed 1D3 will also apply to the 1DS3.

I have done some focus tests on my 1ds3 and would say that I am more than happy at the moment, but then I have not got any way to replicate +25'c and bright ( Oh the joys of a being a UK photographer). I have been photographing number plates over the past two days and would say that it 'hits' as often as my 1ds2 did which was very good - most errors being operator usage.

What I have also played with is a D3 and (remembering I now use Canon ) I would say that the difference between Canon and Nikon will all but dissappeared if the new D3x (expected April) is around 20MP and holds the stunning lack of noise (above 3200) that the current D3 does and the 1ds3 simply (currently) cannot do as it cannot go above 3200ISO. That said, to hold that lack of noise down will be no mean feat given the decreased pixel size required in the proposed D3x in order to get the 22M in a FF chip - i.e. what Canon has already done.

I have tested Canons custom menu noise reduction at higher ISO's and it is impressive against a night sky, and that, combined with Long exposure noise reduction, and I am really impressed, but I fear it is not as clean as the current D3 which has larger pixels.

In normal use the lack of Noise in the 1DS3 at 1000 iso is amazing. I suppose the question is how often will you use 1000 ISO + for it inevitably has more noise on all the cameras than the normal 250ISO level.

What does come across from all the reviews is that pixel race is most probably over, at an operational 21M, or there abouts, it's the lenses or the AA filter that need to change next.

What is really good is that sparing functionality, at an equivelent level, between the big two will drive prices down, but not that I expect the Canon IDS3 to drop beneath what I paid for mine

I've been using the D300 at 1000ISO today, and that is amazing! That could easily transfer to a D3X at 18mp, so it will be interesting to see what does transpire.

Cheers for all the !Ds3 Info, very interesting to read, not that I have any kidneys left to sell after removing the last one to get my 5D.
