I'm thinking of going to Merritt some time this winter for 2-3 days, maybe towards the end of this month.
All I know about it is from web sites: "From I-95: take Exit 80 (SR 406) east through Titusville. Cross over the Indian River Lagoon. The refuge entrance sign is visible on the east side of the causeway. Continue east for 4 miles to reach the Visitor Information Center."
Here are my questions:
- What's a good hotel to stay at near the Refuge? Something in the range of a Holiday Inn or Best Western?
- Should I go to the Visitor Center? Is there a main trail right there that photographers use? Is it all walking, or driving and walking?
- Any special places to best see eagles, spoonies, and owls?
- Anything else? Any "gotchas"?
I live on the other coast but have been to Merritt a few times, there are many hotels by I-95 of the type you speak of; no problem getting rooms. Check out Black-point drive at Merritt, drive by car with many opportunities.

Thanks in advance.
When you get some information, I might be interested as well.
