40D, focus problems?

I'm still getting used to my 40D, I use it almost exlusively w/ a 1-400mm IS lense. It seems to me that a higher % than ever of my images are just a hair soft. It's really starting to bother me.
How common is it that a camera body isn't calibrated in terms of of autofocus. I suppose it could be the lense.
If I want canon to check it out, should I send both in so they are calibrated w/ each other?
Thanks for any responses.

Dan,
I had the same problem with my 70-200 when I first bought my 40D. I emailed Canon tech support and they asked me to reset the camera to factory defaults. Amazingly, that worked and my focus problems were resolved. You might give that a try. If that doesn't work, open a case with their tech support (you can find the link from Canon's website) and they'll send you the info you need to send in the camera and/or lens. BTW, the nearest service center to you is in Irvine, CA.
Good luck,
Paul

No, I've used two 10D bodies for a few years and shot 1000's of sharp images.

Sorry...I deleted the above post asking if this was your first DSLR.

Dan

I seem to be facing similar problems.

(This being my first SLR, I have no ways of comparison - so I am guessing a bit here). It happens to me when I am in the field. For studio shots at home, it is perfect. So I guess in my case it is my problem and not the camera's. Having said that studio shots are for relatively close subjects - 8-9 feet while field shots are for subject 30-60 feet away.

Anyways, since you are facing this issue as well, I will keep a look out. Could be that my camera needs to be calibrated for my lens.

My nearest service center also happens to be in Irvine.

Paul, How does one reset factory defaults ?

Gaurav, I think the reset is called "Clear settings" or something like that. (I'm not near my equipment right now)
