A partnership of U.S. Energy Corp and Kobex Corp. of Canada
have announced plans to dig up Mt Emmons known to locals
as the "Red Lady".

The word just got out at the end of October. They are in
the beginning stages of resistance by forming the Red
Lady Coalition.

The best description of the project that I found was at:

http://www.hccaonline.org/page.cfm?pageid=2035
There are several pages and a map here under the title of "Red Lady".

According to the description here, they plan to move
enough rock to cover the country between Crested
Butte & Gunnison and between Gunnison and Montrose with 15 feet.

P.S. They plan to haul the ore down Kebler Pass to Somerset &
put it on the railroad there.

It is worth your time to read up on this.

The Red Lady Coalition has a new website at:

The Mining Company has a new website at:

The Website of the watershed coalition is:

Oh, good ghod!
I wonder how they'll make a profit once the Climax mine re-opens; the Climax has enough Molybdenum to sink the market on its own (it's done it once before...).

There is a single bright spot to the theoretical proposal - it's not a strip mine, and waste rock will be largely used to fill the shafts once they're mined out.

I'd be more worried that one of the proposed truck routes is Ohio Pass; that would, I think, involve some road upgrades that might affect the special character of that road.
