I've read some previous articles, but none really answered my question. I want to get into making panoramics, and ps isn't cuttin' it. Can anyone tell me what the "Mercedes Benz" of pano software is?
Appreciate any input

On my personal experience, i'd say that would be autopano pro. You can download a trial and test it out for yourself.

AutoPano Pro is one viable option. I chose to go with Panorama Factory when I upgraded from the largely obsolete Panorama Maker a bit more than a year ago.

I have had no problems with CS-3 version of Photomerge - but if you have an earlier version of Photoshop, the pan stitch does bite big-time. Darwin

I used Hugin - it's a frontend to Panotools. Extremely high level of control and power in this piece of software. Great blending with their enblend.
