An extremely cold night

I spent the night on top of Goredale Scar, Malham, last night in hope of catching the meteor shower with the LF camera. I didn’t have much luck though as visibility was about 5 meters. Being optimistic I left the camera setup and kept poking my head out of the tent to see if the sky cleared. It eventually cleared about 6am and I'd fallen asleep forgetting about the tripod and camera which were by now both completely encased in ice like everything else - including the tent. So I had to settle for a snap of the tent just before the sun came up. Tristan

Yes, probably. But wandering down into Goredale Scar just after dawn when no one is around and everything is coated in ice and frost was just unbelievable. It was a fantastic trip, I'm hoping for snow next time.

That's dedication for you. Only had thick cloud here on the south coast, so no chance for any meteors unfortunately.

Tristan, I've been looking for a sleeping bag for the last few weeks and am still totally undecided which one to go for. What make and model bag do you use and was it adequate to keep you warm in the frosty conditions that you had?

you are mad..... but then the images you get are pretty unique, so fair play mate :toast:

Looks pretty serene there...bit cold for me though

Pity that the sky never cleared for you, fortune normally favours the brave........ in this case you might consider swapping brave for mad

I've just spent a good few minutes browsing your website and have to say that you have some stunning images there. Your brother's site also holds some good viewing.

Fancy joining me tomorrow Tristan - I'm back in the lake again - weather permitting - and could do with some company :jump: :jump: :jump: :jump:   :jump: :jump:

Pity about the cloud cover as last night was the period of maximum debris density wasn't it - never mind, there's always next year :wavey:

i did peek my head out of the velux on thursday after justins heads up...thanks justin.....however, after seeing two 'shooting stars' i decided even the most fantastic image would have to wait as it was far too cold for my little bald bonse to be doing such a thing.

this puts me rightly to shame...well done tristan. i'm sure this image would be a seller too for an outdoor adventure company. i love it.

Nice shot, send it to th tent manufacturer.

Bonkers! That's what you are.

Like the shot, Tom's idea of sending it to the manufacturer is a good one.

Great stuff Tristan - it sums up the environment and 'feel' of the place perfectly!

Justin - a friend of mine has The North Face 'Snowshoe' bag which he regularly uses in freezing conditions (http://www.ellis-brigham.com/cgi-bin/psProdDet.cgi/204140%7C%7C@cSleeping%20Bags@bThe%20North%20Face%7C0%7Cuser%7C1,0,0,1%7C24%7C)

I use a summer sleeping bag and wear my clothes to bed - saves weight and size in your bag. This guide may be some help - http://www.tiso.com/ask_expert/buying_guides/sleepingbags/

Definately bonkers here Tristan, such a shame you didn't get the shot you wanted but Tom is right the tent manufacturer, should be beating his way to your door for an image like this.

You're nuts! It's been absolutely arctic on the moors the last few nights. You deserved a break in the clouds.

Each time I go camping I try to take a shot of the tent - here is one taken a couple of months ago. Seems an easy shot when you're out and about.

Justin: The sleeping bag is a Mountain Equipment Dreamcatcher 500. It certainly isn’t warm enough for the conditions the other night as it was still chilly with 3 thick pairs of socks, 2 pairs of trousers, 5 layers of tops and a big thick woolly hat. Slept fine but by morning it was getting rather difficult to warm up but fine once you're up and about and moving.

Andy: I wish I was in the lakes now - I swindled a rare day off work to get out for Friday night. Have a good time.

TomW: Any thoughts on how you would go about pricing an image if you approach a manufacturer directly?

Thanks Tristan.

Excellent pair of images too, good luck with the manufacturer, if you decide to go that route.

Tristan,

One thing struck me though ( as I don't recognise the tent) is that this may not be the colour of the tent, is it? If not get some filters...

To your question, there is no hard and fast rules in this case.

The manufacture would have to pay a fair amount to set somethin like this setup but on the flip side is not asking for the image - in fact you are going to have to work to sell it to them.

If it is the colour of the tent I would get a series of the best ones together and present tham as a set, see what they think, then open the dialogue remember whatever you get is a plus but it would take them about £700 to replicate the shot (T&S, Photographer and directs) if they were interested, and if so they can have this one now - no risk of bad weather.

Justin, for winter I have a Rab Summit 700, it will cope well..

Thanks Tom, that's really interesting info. I've never even thought of making sure the tent colour is correct - it's a moss green but lit from inside with a led headlamp which is a very cold light source. The tent is Jack Wolfskin. I'm planning on making a series of images in different locations so might approach them with a set in the near future. Many thanks for the advice. Tristan
