Over the past few years, I've always bought nearly all my gear from B&H. But I've been looking at picking up a new D300, and I've compared B&H to a local shop, and found that they are offering the same price. So, in the interest of not wanting to wait for shipping, I figured I'd give the local guy my business. Any suggestions? Anyone I should stay away from? Denver metro area please.

The downtown Wolf Camera (15th & California) isn't terrible. They have a couple of knowledgeable people and they usually have a fair selection of equipment. Their prices on big ticket items are almost competitive with the mail order houses but you can expect to get raped on incidental items like memory cards, for example. Since I work downtown, they're very convenient for me and I've spent a shameful amount of time and money there.

Wolf Camera on Arapahoe (between Quebec asnd Yosemite) isn't bad. Ask for Keith. He seems to be the most knowledgeable person there. I haven't checked them out yet, but there is also Denver Pro Photo on 235 South Cherokee.

If you're going to buy local, I'd personally avoid the big chains like Wolf/Ritz and do business with a Colorado business - Mike's Camera or Denver Pro Photo would be my choice.

From what I've read, you're gonna like the D300. :toast:

I've been happy with the Mike's in Boulder; the one near Park Meadows I've had mixed but mostly positive experiences with. I don't know about the other ones.
I bought my D2X locally (yes, the taxes hurt...) because the base price was the same as B&H, I like supporting local businesses, I felt more comfortable being able to take such a significant investment back to a person instead of a mailbox if I had problems, and because I don't feel like I'm cheating when I take the camera in for a look-over or cleaning.

Enjoy!

Thanks for the recommendations. I was considering Mike's, but they don't have the camera or lens in stock. I'll probably just end up at Wolf, I guess.

Brent,
I've done a good bit of business at Englewood Camera, Broadway and Littleton Blvd. It's a little far south for you but Bryce, the owner, has very competitive pricing, is very fair and honest, and give the best trade-in allowances on used gear I've ever seen. Pat
