Hi,

This image was taken on the beach at Holme, Norfolk, a few months ago. It was about half an hour after sunset and getting quite dark, so I sort of guessed the exposure, unfortunately it was a bit under so I lost most of the shadows, and I abandoned the image. Still it has a nice glow to it, so I scanned it yesterday to see what it looked like lightened up.

I really wanted those interesting sand patterns to be in the immediate foreground, but the wet sand was to soft to keep the tripod still for such a long exposure. If you look on the horizon to the right, you can just make out the lights of a couple of oil rigs.

Note - some people in ESS felt that this should be cropped again back to 4x5 aspect, but I am still sticking with the square at the moment. Here is the cropped version anyway for you to compare.

Thanks for looking,
Tom.

Ebony RSW45, Schneider 90mm, Provia, 3-stop grad, cropped square.

Tom - images like this could possibly make me like square images :toast: :toast: :toast:

The crop doesn't have quite the impact does it...

But then again, if there was a bloomin' great chunk of sky above all this glorious beach it'd be another image again.

My big problem with squares is not from a comp PoV but from an editorial/layout one - if I wanted to use this as a cover I'd be knackered because I'd have to crop it - and that would ruin the image.

But as a display image it's gorgeous :wavey: :toast:

That's very tranquil with a lovely composition and lead.

I'm not a landscape photographer myself but I think this looks great. Makes me want to be there and that's my way to compliment you with this lovely shot..
Well done.

Hi Tom,

Lovely tranquil scene as Tom says with a good lead in.

No problem with using squares for a cover, just add more sky to it and the title covers the PS messing about

I'm stuck between which I'd be happier with, possibly this version because the foreground holds enough detail and interest to keep my eyes there comfortably and I'm able to move at my own pace through the image, with the crop you are forcing me to look at the journey's end too soon

Really nice composition Tom and I don't agree with the ESS suggested crop - it works much better as it it for me. The subtle colours in the sky are great - it would be nice to have a tad more detail in the blacks but I know how easy it is to loose the shadows on Provia now....better under anyway or you might have lost that great sky.
