I recently went on my first ski outing of the year at Wolf Creek (what incredible conditions) and found the snow tortured trees at the top of the ski area fascinating. I had brought my Canon S3 along and immediately began wishing that I had brought the 5D. Next time, I guess. Anyway, I thought I'd share a few of the images I came away with.

The wind was really howling at the top by the end of the day.

I posted this one already in the holiday theme thread, but I'll post it here again.

The trees are incredible. All three present a different mood and I like all of them. They look like giant piles of whipped cream... I need a sugar fix.

I really like the first image, good job!

Fantastic, especially #1 and #3. Those trees look like they're somewhere in British Columbia or the North Cascades.

That first one is really good! The S3 (and you) did a terrific job capturing it.

I'm with Don, these look like trees on the slopes of Rainier or some other Cascade Range peak. Fantastic shots, Guy!

Nice one, I love that second one, wow, that looks ferocious.

Ah, the beauty of carrying a small camera! I can't imagine skiing with my dslr. Really nice stuff.
These are excellent! Definitely go back with the 5D.

Fantastic. Conditions like that are relatively rare here. Nice find!

All three are sweet and I agree that they look like something out of the PNW. But #2 is the choice of the litter for me.

Surreal shots, wish i was there!

Great photos, but #2 is awesome!

These are great. This is the kind of shot I hope to find this year in Idaho. Thanks for the inspiration.

Beautiful work Guy.

Thanks for the kind words everyone. Come to think of it, the last time I saw something similar to this was when I was skiing at Steven's Pass in the Cascades. It is rather PNW-like.
Paul W....carrying a small p&s does have its advantages, but its been a while since I've used one and I gotta say that I really dislike them. Trying to compose using the LCD screen (the viewfinder is just worthless) is such a crapshoot in those bright conditions. I could hardly tell what I was aiming at. Also, I forgot how little you can manipulate those jpg files before noise and other nasty issues rear their ugly head. I'd seriously rather take 2 or 3 runs with the dslr (once I've scouted things out and know what I want to shoot) and stick it back into a locker when I'm done.
