I am seriously thinking of going to the Lake Mattamuskeet area Saturday through Monday. Can anyone recommend a motel or place to stay close by? I will probably be alone and I have never been there before.
Thanks
Randy

I used to live on the Outer Banks and we went to the Lake quite often. Unfortunately there really isn't much to choose from concerning accommodation's. What type of stay are you looking for? If you are interested in a B&B there are a few, very few, in Swanquarter (15 min away) and Belhaven (45 min away). If you are looking for a typical hotel then you are probably going to have to stay on the Outer Banks or Washington/Greenville. Both being 90+/- minutes away but you get restaurants and such. If you are going for birds and have time I would recommend the Outer Banks and head down to Pea Island Wildlife Sanctuary just South of Bodie Island Lighthouse and Oregon Inlet. If you have any other questions let me know and I'll try and help.

I was facing that same problem last week. I've never been there but I am going next week, Wed 26th thru Saturday. Hotels seem to be slim pickens. Travelocity and Expedia never heard of this area. I finally found this site.http://www.hydecounty.org/hc-accommodations.asp which contains a list of accommodations in the area. I read an article online that I can't seem to find right now that recommended the Hotel Engelhard in Engelhard, NC. I called them and made a reservation. $66 per night. Guess I will find out what the place looks like next week.
Good Luck

Thanks Paul & Eric! I am heading out now, and will be calling Hotel Engelhard on the way. That seems to be about the closest to Mattamuskeet.
