'Save for web' - mystery

I use CS2 on both my Powermac and my Macbook to process my images.

When preparing images for the web on my Powermac, I convert them from Adobe RGB to sRGB and then go to the 'Save for web' screen. In terms of color, the image looks the same as the original, as it should. I then enter the maximum file size, usually 100kb, and hit Save. This has been working flawlessly for ages.

There are two problems with this workflow on my Macbook.

First, when I convert the file from Adobe RGB to sRGB and go to the 'Save for web' screen, the image looks different there then the original. It looks a lot less saturated. I can't understand why. I use the exact same workflow as on my Powermac, the same settings, yet with different results.

The second problem is even more bizarre. When using the 'Save for web' feature, I always enter the maximum file size, usually 100kb. When I do this on my Powermac, I get images that are either 100kb or slightly smaller. Nice.

Now when I do the same routine on my Macbook, the files actually end up being a lot bigger than those 100kb. In the 'Save for web' screen it says that the file will be saved at 100kb, but when I look at the folder where I saved the image, it is much bigger. Totally weird.

I thought it might be a bug in the 'Save for web' feature, but even when I use the 'Save As' feature, it does the same thing - the files end up much, much bigger than it says in the 'Save As' screen.

I would really appreciate any help on these two issues, because they're driving me completely insane.

Thanks!

The only think i can think of for the color problem is that your monitor is loading a wrong color profile, do you have any way of calibrating it and trying again?
I've got no clue on the file size issue.

Thanks Wim. I have calibrated both the monitor of my Powermac and that of my Macbook. It makes no difference. :frown:

Marsel,
I used to convert images to monitor profile earlier and things looked ok to me on different computers/monitors at work and home.
sRGB is indeed tricky. My BW images turn slightly cooler after the conversion. Sorry, can not help much.

Just a wild guess but as for the file size issue, check to see if you are saving any extra data (for example in CS3 there is an option to save XMP data) somehow when you save for web on your macbook (this could potentially cause your file size to increase above what you set, and the settings in each photoshop on each computer could be different). This is what 'Save As' does - keeps data such as exif data in the file - and one of the purposes of save for web is to strip this to make the file smaller or more web optimized. As for the color change, check to see about your display settings in the save for web dialog - in CS3 there are selections such as "standard macintosh color" and "uncompensated color" and each selection renders the color differently. Again, these are only guesses and I hope your problems get resolved
