Dream Lake on Christmas eve
Like Erik, I decided to leave the comfort of a warm bed and get pounded by the wind on Christmas eve morning. I was on my hands and knees and had the tripod wedged against my knee to keep it from sliding across the ice. I've been hiking to Dream Lake for 20 years now and this was one of the windiest mornings I've experienced.
Happy Holidays to everyone!

Fantastic shot, Paul! The patterns in the ice are amazing, they really add a lot to an already stellar image.

Great shot, great color!

Beautiful Paul! I'm amazed to see so much clear ice. It was completely snow covered when I was there on Saturday in spite of the gale force winds.

Paul,
Great photo!!! :toast: :jump:

I love the color, composition, and ICE Waves!!! Way cool!

It looks like the pain was definately worth the gain in your case. I think you have the earliest season shot of these ice waves on record. I know exactly what that is like to try and stabilize the tripod on these ultra slipery ice waves. And with the wind that intense it is amazing you were able to pull off a sharp image.

Just curious what equipment and settings you used for this one? The lens looks like a WA. I took your advice and picked up a mint Contax Zeiss 35-70/3.4 from KEH + C/Y to EOS adapter. I am looking forward to trying it out soon.

Thanks for the tips,

- Derek

Outstanding Paul! I can't wait to get up there again myself but hopefully with less intense conditions. :toast:
Happy Holidays and New Year to you too!

Thanks for the comments!
Derek, congrats on the new lens. I love mine.
BTW, this image was shot with a 40D and 12-24 Tokina at 13mm. No filters.

I am surprised you did not use a GND filter with the nice even exposure from foreground to background.

Once I go full frame the Tokina 12-24 will be the only thing I will miss. Hopefully I can find a FF equivalent in the 17-40L or maybe some alternative Zeiss/Leica/Zuko wide primes.

Everything came together for you in that shot! That is a definate winner. :wavey:

Paul, those are some awesome conditions youve captured and the comp is perfect! On this uncalibrated monitor, the colors look slightly off to me--a little too violet in the ice.

Nice shot. I like the long view. The colors in the water seem a nip off to me too.

Great shot, Paul. Really cool ice formations in the foreground. :toast:

Yeah, as Todd said, the ice shapes are making this an outstanding shot. The light, comp, and contrast are all spot on. Congrats, and thank you for posting.
