Christmas morning sunrise
Our family festivities didn't begin until 10:00 Christmas morning so I got the OK to get out for a quick sunrise shot. The gods didn't disappoint; I got pretty lucky. Walking upstream along railroad tracks to some rapids in the Wenatchee River that I hoped would make a nice FG for a the sunrise, I looked over my shoulder to the east and saw crepuscular rays poking through a little horizontal slit in the clouds which were brilliant violet orange. I panicked, ran along the tracks in my snow boots, slid down the rip rap, dropped my pack by the waters edge and got out my stuff. The color was already turning to yellow tones and I got off this one shot before the color vanished.

This is my first attempt at blending two RAW files. I've been too much of a cheapskate to buy all the GND filters and so will go a season using this technique and see how it goes. The blend is uneven in the big trees on the R; I'm not sure what to do about that. Sharpening accentuated the line between the two files, seen above the hills.

Sony R1, .8 & 1/8 sec @ f/14, 24mm, cheap tripod.

Sweet color!!

Do you live on the Wenatchee side of the Mt's or just visitng?

Janet: We (Margareta and I) lived in Wenatchee until October of '06 when we bought a fixer-upper in Cashmere (up river) to help pay for a house we're building in Leavenworth on land we have owned for awhile. The theory is we will sell the Cashmere place for a profit and plow the $$$ into the principle on the 11worth place.

BTW friends: A hiking buddy of mine maintains the Wenatchee Outdoors website and through him I've got my fifteen minutes of fame: On the home page is a slide show of my images:

Now that is a way to start out Xmas morning! I say the blend is pretty good. Could use some more work on the right. I would work with it though, this is a keeper!

Hi David - That would be great. One of these weekends I would like to catch both ends of the day at the Ancient Lakes/Frenchman Coulee area.

Holy cow, those are some awesome colors. I''m not too sure about the comp but I know you didn't have much time to get a perfectly composed shot. Is it me or does it look a little tilted?

Erik: Oops. I'm busted. I did a slight perspective crop of the lower left corner to remove an unwanted river stone. It must have tilted the river horizon down on the left.

On the colors: You guys/gals don't think they're too brown? The jpeg seemed to lose a bit of zip over the master.

Beautiful shot. Amazing colors in the sky and on the water. Nice job on the blend too.

Don't sweat the small stuff, the image says POW and ahhhhhh all at the same time. Work it a little more for perfection before submissions if you like, but the overall concensus is Great Image!

Wonderful sunrise shot! The scene is beautiful. Impressed with your 1st attempt at a digital grad. Personally, I think once you master the digital blends the idea of investing in filters will seem like a waste of money.
