I've got some time this weekend with New Year's coming up to get out and get my first Winter photos.....snow and everything:)
Any recommendations for good 1-day outings from central Portland? 1 Overnight stay would be possible. I'd thought about the Painted Hills as a two-fer, but am open to anything.
thanks

a lot of views but no replies. Maybe not a lot of Portlanders. Any ideas for somewhere I should check out?
(sorry for the shameless Bump)

Chris - you might try driving up I-5 to Woodland, Wa. - then drive East out 503 towards Cougar. You can explore the Lewis River - waterfalls, views of St Helens, etc. Usually plenty of snow and great looking forest. If the road allows, you can take a trip back via Carson.

Getting over to the east side might be kind of tricky with the 30 inches of snow they have forecast for the mountain passes. If you do decide to travel to the east side, then the Sisters area and the Metolius area around camp Sherman might be a good choice with the Ponderosas, snow and river.

Everyone is still digesting from their Christmas over-eating, Chris...
Right now, it looks like we might get clear weather on Monday and/or Tuesday, after the massive dump of snow this week. So if you've got access to snowshoes or skis, it would be a great time to hit any number of spots around Mount Hood that are within easy reach of Portland. The mountain should be spectacular!

Trillium Lake...it's 2 miles down, and 2 miles back up. Not too bad of a hike. Snowshoes are a must.

I was up the Multnomah Falls trail yesterday and up high it is covered in snow. There is a lot to shoot up along Multnomah creek around Weisendanger falls and beyond. You could spend a whole day up there and not run out of interesting thins to shoot,

Thanks for the recommendations everyone. TOday I'm heading to Trillium Lake since I've never done that loop. It'll be stormy, but should make for some interesting lighting at times.
I may take a trip up to Cougar and Yacolt on Monday depending how bad the weather is.
