This is another shot taken in the really nice cold spell just before christmas. Pano crops are not my usual thing so I'm not absolutely sure if the composition works here. Its cropped from a single frame and for some reason I didn't take any shots with more sky than this. So yet again - does this work? Any suggestions for improving this type of image?

There is a larger version here as 720px seems a little small for a long thin image with so much detail.

Many thanks
Tristan

Hi Tristan,
Yes, for me this works, though certainly not your usual, and I wouldn't have guessed it was yours had I not seen your name. The composition is, I feel, not as strong as some you have produced, but it works, and the tones and colours of the winter landscape coupled with the coating of frost and fog really make the image. If the rest of the sky was any good I think you are right, more sky might have worked well, but never the less I like it.
Thanks for sharing,
Tom.

Does it for me

Sorry but the smaller one does'nt do your shot any justice. The bigger version looks great.

Thanks Tom, Alan. This is the full frame - I have quite a lot of other comps including verticals that contain more sky but this is the one I picked out as being the strongest and I liked the 50/25/25 split of the pano crop. At the time I obviously thought more foreground was better.

Certainly not my usual type of thing but I'm keen to start exploring other areas when I can... maybe I'll post a clear blue sky one day ... but I hope not.

Tristan - for what it's worth, I actually prefer the original post.

The repost is awesome, but I find the immediate FG bracken stalks a bit distracting, because my eye wants to focus on that stunning vanishing point that's shrouded in mist.

That's just my opinion though

So, the 50/25/25 does it for me in spades :toast: :toast:

I'm with Andy, and for the same reasons; I prefer the pano.
Best wishes

No idea how to improve it Tristan as I am not that skilled but do feel the pano works best in this case. :toast:

Hi Tristan. I love the colours and the texture in the foreground. I think the comp works well with the soft diagonal lines and the depth through the image. I think the pano works best as there is not enough drama in the sky for a standard format - so it feels like dead space. I would be tempted to try a 2.5:1 or even a 3:1 crop of the original pano OR a 2:1 crop of your repost with much more emphasis on the foreground. :toast: :toast: :toast:

Thanks Elliott - I've just tried each of your suggestions and I really like the 2:1 crop with foreground. I love skies so I'm always really reluctant to crop them but it does seem to balance it up for me. 3:1 also works ok but I can’t seem to balance the 2.5:1. Thanks, Tristan

Anyone familiar with what the most popular ratios for panos actually are?

I like this better than the first repost Tristan - but the original post still gets my vote

The drama (for me at any rate) is all in the middle and far distance and the sky - methinks perhaps you ought to trust your original instincts

That's my to'penorth anyway

Happy New Year Tristan :toast:

Tristan,

I prefer the first repost to be honest, I think the FG interest really adds to the shot.

Excellent.

I like the last repost, seems more balanced to me although like you I am usually reluctant to crop skies. This type of shot needs size so as you say the larger the better for this one to make the most of all the wonderful detail.

Great shot as usual :toast: :toast:

I know nothing about the technicalities of LS photography, but to me the first post is the best.
The sky is the main feature for me, with lots of subtle detail leading the eye towards some mysterious destination in the mist on the horizon. The more I look at it, the more I like it.
