It's 28 degrees here, snowing like crazy, and this guy is FISHING???
He must be crazy. Who would do this?
Of course, if he was TAKING PICTURES, it would be totally understandable and not crazy at all.
Tee hee.
Happy New Year to all!

Those winter steelheaders are a hardy group, too!

you got that right, Ned.....My father is one of them.....I went with him one time and when my feet froze and my line froze up I decided that was enough for me!!!!

I caught my biggest Steelhead at 22 degrees and snowing. A 16.5lb hen, on the Clear Water River a few miles north of Orofino, Idaho. the spot is locally known as "Saddle Bags".
My brother was a diehard fisherman till the day he died. I spent a week with him in Janurary 1993. It was the only time I ever outfished him.
Now would I have gone fishing in that kind of weather if my brother hadn't insisted? NOT ON YOUR LIFE! but then I've never been much of a fisherman either
He's braving more than poor weather to persue his passion considering the unstable
appearing "perch" he chosen to keep his balance and if he hooked a fighter from there I'd want to have a video-camera handy!

That's OK - Inge & Sean Watson & Nancy & I were out at Fir Island today getting shots of swans and snow geese freezing our butts off. But so was Art Wolfe standing right next to us!!! It has been a GREAT day of awesome avian nature!!! I'll get something posted here soon!!
the pathetic thing is that this is the Sandy River, taken from my deck. There has been nothing in here for years worth mentioing - but they finally blasted out the damn Marmot Dam a few months ago, so maybe the salmon and steelhead will be back eventually. Sure hope so.

My wife and I were returning to Cashmere the other day from a cold morning of track skiing in Leavenworth. It was one of those mornings where, no matter how hard you work, you never really warm up. It was, like, well below freezing, ice everywhere. As we crossed over the Wenatchee River bridge, I looked up stream and see two guys in hip waders right out in the middle of the current, the water almost up to their crotches. I guess they were fishing for steelhead; it's like a religion over here. Dang, now I'm sorry I didn't get a shot of them to post here.
