New Year's Resolutions?

Generally, I'm opposed to New Year's resolutions. If I need to do something, I try and do it any time of the year. This year is a bit of the exception as some time for contemplation is coinciding with the new year. (This is certainly not to disparage those that do New Year's resolutions, I've just found I don't necessarily stick to a resolution any better when started at the beginning of the year.)

The current year has been devoted mostly to work and to obtaining a premier certification in my field. I recently took an 8 hour certification exam and I found out right before Christmas that I passed. That was an excellent Christmas present! My time with photography really suffered, and I'm trying to get out of a phase of 'photographic depression'.

One resolution I have is to devote much more time to getting out and taking pics. I have a number of clients up in the mountain communities and I need to stop whining about my job and how it impedes my taking pics, and instead, taking advantage of some of the opportunities it affords. I may be camping to economically pay my own way for overnight stays, so I'll probaby be asking for advice in the coming months about camping equipment - I don't even so much as own a decent sleeping bag. I know, that's pretty sad.

My second resolution is to get a business license for photography. I'm hoping there are some tax breaks that I can take advantage of as Bill Chambers on the main forum had once alluded to. On that note, does anyone know a good accountant or tax expert I could talk to so I can start things out on the right foot?

Enough about me, does anyone else have a New Year's resolution regarding their photography?

Shoot more large format. Use the polaroid film that I have to really practice focus and exposure in a variety of conditions and situations so I get more comfortable with the camera. Right now LF is not always my first choice but I sure like the results when I get something good!

Happy New Year everyone! I sure enjoyed 2007, especially the outings and run-ins with fellow RMNPers.

Hi Steve, welcome back to the land of the forum! I truly hope some of work will sell. Many lookers, many likers, no buyers yet  I want to acquire an Epson 4800 printer.

New Year's resolution: Don't make New Year's resolutions.

(Right up there with "Everything I say is a lie. That said, I am lying.")

I'm not a resolutions kind of person. But for 2008 I do have some goals.

1) Determine whether I want to obtain a business license for photography or just continue doing it as a 1099 venture.

2) Decide on a process for accepting credit cards. Paypal has always made me nervous due to the security flaws that have been identified and exploited in the past, but depending on the answer to #1, this may be my choice.

3) Get a professional site online. I have an idea of what I want to do now, but I need to dedicate time to this project.

4) Sell more photos.

Follow my passion, whatever that may be. Sometimes I can get burned out with nature photography (is that sacrilege to say here?), so I may spend more time experimenting with other types of photography. And I plan to travel to more places I've never been to before. I enjoy traveling more than taking photos. No image can replace simply being there. I may spend more time writing as well. Maybe get work done on a novel.

I prefer well-defined "goals" to "resolutions". My primary goal in 2008 will be a big step for me, as I'll be leaving my "day job" and running the photography business full-time - something I've been doing part-time for ten years now. I noticed several are hoping to start up photo businesses and if the moderators would permit it, perhaps an off-topic discussion would be permissible? I'd be happy to chime in with my own experiences.

While I don't think of myself that much of an expert yet, I -have- had some successes, which I plan to share in the form of a new evening seminar; "The Business of Photography" coming up on March 25th. More on that later. Many of my seminar and tour participants have gone on to start successful part-time photo-related businesses, which is really gratifying. My real passion is teaching photography and sharing God's handiwork in the form of landscapes in cool locations around the country. If I can make a bit of a living at it, I'll consider myself very blessed.

My resolution is to get out and explore Colorado much much more than I did in 2007. I know it's only one thing but it keeps it simple for me. Maybe I won't fail like all my other resolutions.
