Handheld sitting on the tailgate of our Dakota

Hi folks,

Yesterday was just a blast!!! Even with a nasty cold and freezing my ass off. Then shooting next to Art Wolfe and NOT realizing who he was until he was back in his car about to leave. He was MOST gracious to us and it was great to be able to rub elbows with him.

So yesterday I handheld most of my images with our Tamron 200-500mm lens. It's lightweight for what it is and makes hand holding rather easy. But but but, in looking at these in Lightroom after the fact I am "learning" that just cuz it's a lightweight lens does NOT mean handholding is the best choice. Most of my images came back rather soft. So next time the big tripod with the gimbal mount will be coming with us.

These swans we found in a field just east of I-5 in Conway. We took the Conway exit and drove back south next to the freeway and I sat on the tailgate and blazed away @ 8 frames a second. This image is a hefty crop at ISO 800. It's far too soft for any significant enlargement but the wonderful behavior of the swans makes it a keeper.

If this small sampling of the number of birds that are up there is any indication it must have been pretty loud out in that field.

I ran into an older photog up at Eunice Lake a few years ago, got to talking to him about photography in general and stock in particular. Sounded like he was pretty experienced so I asked if he did this full time. He did. I asked his name......David Muench was his reply. I'm sure I turned several shades of red....

Great action in this one Rick. Sounds like an amazing day!

I don't pretend to know my birds, Rick - but aren't these trumpeter swans? My recollection is that they are the only swan with and all-black bill. I thought they were fairly uncommon, but again... just my crude bird knowledge at work, there! Cool shot!

That's a fun shot, Rick. Looks like they're having quite a discussion.

As I understand it from my Audubon friend, Trumpeters (all black bill) and Tundras (some yellow in the bill) are the most common in our neck of the woods and are here in the winter months. Does that fit with others' knowlege/experience?
