before anyone asks I already tried the search filter :-)
I have a 1.4 Sigma convertor that I've been using with my 120-300 Sigma for walking and hand holding shots and its fine, in fact its pretty darned good, so have been wondering about the 2x to get a bit more hand holdable reach, is the Sigma the one to go for ?, or is it worth stumping up the cash for the Nikon version ?
Anyone any thoughts please ?
and Andy, before you ask, no, its not going to impede the tripod purchase :-)

I think the Sigma is great. It slows down the Af speed but I can live with that. I hate it with over flying birds
The Sigma is well build. I don't know if the Nikon will fit the Sigma lens.

The normal caveats apply about 2x, but with the Sigma lenses, the Sigma converters work better. With the Nikon ones there tends to be a slight stuttering in fixing focus.
Having said that, have you thought about the 1.7x?

If I'm not mistaken the tc1.7 nikon is a DX fitting - unless you disassemble the mounting ring and grind the tag off it you can't mount it to any non DX lens.

The Nikon TC-17E is not just for DX lenses, like all modern Nikon TCs it is limited to being used with Nikon AF-I or AF-S lenses, to use it with other lenses you have to remove the tag on the mounting ring, instruction to do this can be found here http://nikonpages.heymanphotography.com/tcmod/index.html there is also a section on which lenses will / won't work with them too.

Hi Steve
the modification to the TC mount is easy to do. However, the Nikon 1.7 will still not work with Sigma 120-300mm I tried and the lens would not maintain focus lock. I ended up selling the lens and buying the Nikon 300mm f2.8.......havnt regretted it for a second!
