Winter Sun
Weather sure has been challenging around here lately. In fact, I've hardly anything to show for a lot of Winter travel thus far, mostly just due to the lack of any breaks at all in the storm cycles. This past week was no exception. Some mediocere images from Rainier and the Tatoosh range taken on a backpacking trip that included lots of wind, overcast skies and almost waist-deep snow, with snowshoes on. I'll head over to the East side this next week and hope things take a turn for the better.
Still though, it's been fun none the less, just to get out there and explore the beauty the NW has to offer as few will see it.

Thanks for comments on this one.

Your attitude is definitely better than mine when it comes to the weather. It's nice to see some shadows on those trees, although "Winter Sun" might be a stretch... I like how you left some space in the foreground in front of the trees.

Marc - waist deep even with snowshoes? Wow. I suppose that's where my old pair of bearpaws would have come in use...

This one doesn't have the same "wow" factor as some of your others but I think in its own way appeals to me even more, perhaps because of its comparative pedestrian look.

I'm glad you picked b/w for this one; there probably wasn't all that much color anyways?

Marc: I like this shot, but for some reason I get this feeling that I'm looking at a lilliputian model of a forest, like a movie set. I think it's the shadows going every which way... Did you tone this?

I also think b/w was a good choice, and that a crop of this would look even better: cropping just below the hot spot at top and taking off some foreground.

Nice image, Marc - I think B&W was a perfect choice on this one. It's a really nice, contemplative shot that captures the still of winter very nicely. This will be a good "in-between" shot for your coffee table book! (in-between the more showy color images that you're known for). Love the sky in this one - that IS sun in the PNW!

I know what you mean about the weather as all my snowshoe adventures have been a bust for sun as well. By the way is this taken with the new Canon 1Ds-3 I left a message for you about wanting to take your workshop in July to Jefferson Wilderness but not sure if I can put a deposit down or if the payment is in full !

Hi Kevin. Yes, this is a 1Ds-3 image. I do have one spot left on the workshop. Too bad I didn't get your message.... It wouldn't be a first though, especially if it came from the link on this site. Anyway, I'll email you this afternoon.

I have been reading this forum every day for months and this is the first image I have seen that has inspired me to comment on how great a photo I think this is. I like the crop, you left the right amount of sky and foreground. I like how it has the perfect blend of reality and fantasy. Congratulations!

I like this, Marc - as always you have a real talent in the details of each of your images..

Well, this is a pretty cool black n white. It's got drama. Not tons, but decent enough to work well.
I hear ya on the snow. I hiked up most of the way up Tumalo in wnear waist deep snow and I had just installed my snow shoe extenders even! That was a serious exertion! Sucks even more because I didn't get any pictures! Sunset was yucky bland, but the snow was amazingly beautiful up there. Now my hips are feeling it, boy oh boy! Next time, I'm renting that helicopter, I swear it!

Marc, you are an animal! I've been hiding out in the Rock Gym all winter, hopefully I'll be able to get out sometime soon though. Glad to see someone is braving the conditions out there. Beautiful Image.

B&W makes this work for me Marc. I like this a lot.

Marc, do you do a lot of photoshop on your images? I keep trying to get images like yours and can't even seem to come close. I'm not a photoshop expert..cant even dodge and burn but I know how to do some processing in RAW and basic stuff in CS3. I love this image as well as all the others you post.

It almost looks like a long exposure taken at night, Marc. It seems real 3D to me.

Awesome shot and yea the storms are non-stop. This is lovely - I bet the detail is awesome in the full sized frame....
