Could someone let me know how to apply a "Sepia" tone to an image? I use CS2.

Thanks in advance.

Google will turn up many ways, Josh, as will many of the Photoshop books out there. My favorite is the TLR (The Light's Right Studio) BW Toning toolkit.

You can also convert your image to B&W (grayscale) and then convert it to duotone. That will get you started.

Here's my favorite way (I use Elements, so I don't have a channel mixer) :

-- Start with your image open - it can be flat or in layers
-- Create an all black layer on top of the image and change its blending mode to "Color". This makes the image appear to be greyscale
-- Add an adjustment layer (EDIT : Should be "Hue/Saturation adjustment layer") just under the black layer - then use the Hue and Saturation sliders to get a look you like
-- Finally, simple add a sepia filter from the Photo Filter list (I think this is also in CS, or something similar). The actual color of this filter, and it's strength, can be adjusted to suit.

Another PS task that can be done 97 ways.

I work the image up as a BW as best as I can. I need a lot of practice in this direction, whether as a greyscale conversion, desaturate, channel mixer, picking one channel and copying as a layer, or 2-3 other methods I have tried. Don't ask me for advice here, since I don't understand the processes intuitively yet.

Then I have used David's suggestion for the sepia filter. Sometimes I have modified the color of the filter slightly, until it looked right. Sometimes, until it looked really, really wrong

Hey, I never did e-mail you. Congratualations on the NPN sponsorship for the IFC Pro Tour competition!!!!!

Josh,

Go to the link provided. Paul has toning curves and a mini tutorial on the subject. The curves can be downloaded.

Thanks for the link Jim. I downloaded the curves (luckily, they work on the curves plug-in that I have for Elements 4). They're nice in and of themselves, but they've really shown me how to tone things in a lot fo different ways. Really cool...
