Well, these are not exactly NE, but a trip from Northeasterns...and definitely a drive worth taking!
We took a trip to DelMarVa this November. The wildlife loop at Chincteague NWR is open all day during the week (10 days) of Thanksgiving. On the way back from VA we stopped at Bomaby Hook NWR in DE, where we saw four red fox (one very close and not shy), LOTS of female Northern Harriers, a few Gr.Blue heron, Kingfishers, one Eagle, etc. in addition to the ~7000 snow geese in their pond. We arrived ealy in the morning and were treated to a most spectacular sunrise (I will post one later). We had a little subdued "chattering" from the snow geese in the pre-dawn hours and lots of geese flying in after sunrise but the real wow was two huge blasts right over our heads. The sound of 14,000 wings beating as one was deafening and awe-inspiring. This was taken with a Canon 40D, on a tripod, with a Canon 28-300mm lens.

Lovely colours in this Lisa, and like the 3D feel from the depth of field.

A breath-taking moment to be sure -- thanks for the post!
Hi Lisa! This is a nice shot!! Love the color hues. There's a place in Maine (Fryeburg Harbor) that has migratory snow geese and canada geese. They rest there for several days before continuing on.
Also in MD, where I'll be going this weekend, there are THOUSANDS of, I think, grackles and red-winged blackbirds that take off shortly after daybreak and come back at dusk. I videotaped them last January. You're right about the noise, way cool!! I even saw them in the distance flying in a black cloud.
