Here's the same male Anna's Hummingbird as in my previous posting, Oh, Anna. This image shows the bird off in a slightly different light angle with correspondingly different appearance of the gorget about the bird's throat/head region.

20D, 300/4 + 1.4x, ISO 400, 1/60 @ f5.6, natural light

Great shot Geoff... I like this one even more since the little dried leaf is not converging with the bird's body.....

Fantastic shot, Geoff.

Truly spectacular Geoff, well done.

I like this one better than the first. It is a better head shot. Great sharpness. I saw a hummingbird fly by my house today in the snow, here in Olympia, but was so fast I could not identify...

Thanks for all the comments, everyone!

Ned - I too had the same observation as you mention for the first image. The leaf melded in with the hummer in the first picture was annoying but the overwhelming intensity of color in the gorget area in that first photo made me want to post anyway.

Marc - I bet if you got a longer lens you'd be taking some pretty spectacular bird shots too! In fact, with that 1DsMkIII you'd have some awful nice numbers of pixels available for cropping!

David - when they fly by like that they remind me of fast bumblebees. They are truly amazing little birds. Most people think they go south for the winter but they are pretty well equipped to overwinter in our climate. I bet if you put out some feeders you'd have them almost resident in your yard.

Meanwhile, I'd like some opinions. I cropped the original to the square aspect that I posted above. The reason I did that was because there was a pruned branch to the right. Here's the original image:

Uncropped version

Is the 3:2 aspect image better because of the additional bg elements? ...even with the cut branch end?

Boy, I like them both and think either/or. If pushed, I guess I like the square just a tad better.

Another gorgeous portrait of Anna's. Good going! The detail is fantastic.

What a great shot, Geoff - the detail and depth of focus is amazing! I'd echo Ned's comment on the leaf placement, too. Nice work!

I think I like the uncropped version the best.. gives it a sense of place...
