Went to get Bittern at the weekend. The bird was already there, 10 meters just in front, at 7am as I could see it's silo. Unfortunately 10 minutes before a I could get a shutter speed of more than a second, some noisey people entered the hide and it flew off. Enviro shots where the only option for the rest of the day
It spent the rest of the day (until 2pm) about 200 yards away making a few odd appearences, this being one of those appearences that was thankfully, a distance behind the front reaeds and into a some light.
600mm/Tpod/TC2
200'/F8/200ASA
Cropped about 10% (i.e. about 19M of image remaining)
Usual PS with smart sharpen set to Canons settings for a 1DS3.
Its very nice and I think quite saleable, shows how you normally see them if you are lucky....

Nice, shame about the annoying people ruining your day, it is rather infuriating when that happens.

Hello Tom for me this is excellent. The use of reads at the bottom and left side make a nice frame. The darker top acts as a nice balance and keeps you looking at the lower part of the picture, just were the Bittern is. But what I like most is the colour tones in this they just work perfectly together. I would agree with Phil quite saleable.

For me this is far better than all those 'in yer face' Bittern shots. It captures the essence of the species perfectly. Brilliant job!

Hi Tom,
Cracking capture , actually prefer Bittern shots that contain more enviroment than Bittern

I like enviro pics more than frame-filling record shots, and with Bittern on my agenda this winter I'd be pleased to have this in my portfolio.
So much easier in your own hide isn't it?

As has been said, including the enviroment works well.
The problems on the day are why I stopped using public hides the top side of a year ago!

Nice shot Tom, makes the bird look secretive so it's pretty damned accurate
So this crop is equivalent to around 19Mb of the CR2 RAW - what interests me Tom is the size of an uncropped 8bit tiff conversion from the DSIII.

I think it's all been said - lovely image, works for me on all levels.

Everything you need to know about the habitat of the Bittern in one picture. Great shot, bet you would rather that the reeds all avoided its face though. Eric
