Hi All,
I have two 1D MKII bodies and have never sent them in for servicing as I have never had a problem with them, and I believe if it aint broke don't fix it. But am thinking about getting them looked at just for peace of mind and so phoned a Canon repair centre and was pretty surprised by their prices. £60 plus VAT just for a sensor clean per body or £180 plus VAT for a full service per body. Is it really worth that amount to send them in if I have no problems??
Also they did'nt know if parts were still availiable for the 600mm f4 non IS? Any of you guys know. I don't have a problem but again "what if" is in my head.
TIA
Regards
Rob

Rob, for something as straight forward as the above, i would be tempted to get in touch with Fixation. I would think that they would be cheaper than Canon. My experience with Fixation has been very good, give them a call and ask for a quote.

I clean my own sensor on my 1D mkII, but if you would sooner a shop do it then I would reconmend Fixation in London http://www.fixationuk.com/digital.htm

Fixation are very good. But they are not that much cheaper - especially with full-frame sensor cleans. I would learn how to do this yourself - I bought the Arctic Butterfly which is perfect. I haven't needed a 'proper' clean since. You first impression is right - if it ain't broke... If you were doing a major shoot or going travelling with it (for months) it would be worth it.

Elliott,
Which Arctic Butterfly model did you buy?

Fixation charge £50 to clean a full frame sensor I think, although they do the first one on a 5D for free.

parts for the old 600 f4, 500 f4.5 and 300 f2.8 are no longer available unless there's some old stock lying around. I ran into problems with one recently and canon in singapore had to call up all the regional branches to check. Eventually managed to get the part from Canon in New Jersey. As for cleaning, do consider sending it to fixation as they are really good and the guys there are all canon trained pros.
Personally I wouldn't even consider paying £60, it's only a two minute job. You can buy a pack of pec pads, a bottle of Eclipse, make a cleaning tool, for no more than £15 in total, and have enough for 100 sensor cleans.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the replies. I do clean my own sensor, but was just wondering about the servicing side of it and if it is worth the price, but as I have no problem I will leave well alone.
Arctic Butterfly 724 is a great bit of kit and removes all dust in seconds, If however you have grease spots then a pro clean or do a wet clean yourself is the way to go
