We're contemplating a visit to June Lake for a week beginning October 31. Just curious what y'all think of that time of year for landscape photos. I like the proximity to Yosemite and Mono Lake.

Hi Lee. It's a great time of year to be in June lake. It might be a bit late for fall colors if that was on the agenda. Fall color seems to happen around the last part of Sept. through first or second week of Oct. Others who know the area better can provide better info. It's a great time 'cause most of the tourists have gone home and it's transitioning into winter.

That was my hope, Cory, that most of the tourists had gone home! I like the off-seasons here in the Rockies, figured it might be the same over there, too.

Lee,
Although I haven't been there that late in the year, you can't go wrong with the Eastern Sierra at any time. Of course, it's very much a crap shoot at that time of year for access to Yosemite. This past autumn the pass was closed for a day or two early in October, re-opened again, and I can't recall if it was still open at the end of October.
The aspens would normally be almost completely spent by then, but there may be pockets here and there. Mono Lake, perfect time to visit; the photogs will be gone and you would probably have the South Tufa to yourself, certainly during the week. You might add Bodie to your agenda, especially if you'll be in the area for a week.
Depending on the landscape images you're thinking of, you may want to consider the Alabama Hills and the Owens Valley. If interested in that area, Cory can certainly help out - he LIVES in Bishop! :-)
As far as toursists in October you basically have two types: photographers and fishermen. I love trout fishing and have always been conflicted when I go there in the fall. I usually end up with the camera and not the fishing pole.
Drop us some ideas of the types of photography you would like to do and we can perhaps zero you in on some fine spots.

Hi Lee,
I agree with Cory and Lon.
I have been going to June Lake since the Big Rock Resort
was Big rock Landing and the number was Mitchell 87717.....
and as folks here can tell ya I also help with Fall workshops in Bodie.
You have to realize that in the Eastern Sierra many places close after Labor Day
as their Summer help aka students return to school.
So I vote for the first week of Oct as being a better bet.
June Lake is at about the 7,600' elevation.
It's colors usually change about a month before the Yosemite Valley floor
that is usually around Halloween...at about 4,000'
I would HIGHLY recommend you pick up a book that has
Wonderful images and directions to the entire Eastern Sierra
I waited about 30 years for this book to come out!! http://www.amazon.com/Californias-Eastern-Sierra-Visitors-Guide/dp/0962850500/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1199965485&sr=1-1
Please be sure to check back here as we will let you know if we are
having an Early Fall or Normal Fall....
This last year was early cuz of the drought conditions....
Good Luck!

Thanks mucho for the updates, folks. We're looking at trading a timeshare week for a place there, but we're also considering other locales, too.
