A rare chance to film a Ferruginous Hawk. I'll attach two photos, one ready for launch and the other immediately afterwards. The second is amazing, even the tail is lifted high for take-off.

Very nice views of a special creature! These birds are state threatened due to habitat loss; and as you said, not easy to photograph. Where did you find this guy?

Very cool Bill. The pose of the first shot is great. How are you liking the D300 for wildlife photos?

Lots of questions, I have been hunting birds around the Fort Collins airport this week, for about an hour each day. I first found a fox hunting mice, then a family of three coyotes living in the airport grounds, lots of kestrels and red-tails, today 4 mature bald eagles, I'll attach one shot from today, and two ferruginous hawks. A pretty good list for three days of looking. If you are interested all are West of the runway on CR-9'ish. Starlings massing at the diary farm too, I need a colored sky though maybe.
The D300 is great, I can use ISO 1600 more often without too much noise and it's quick. I love it.
