I saw this today, I heard he was in decline but it still a little surprising. I suppose you think that a person that could attain the unattainable would live forever. He certainly lived an amazing life and he was a class act --RIP, Sir ED.

I just heard the news. :frown: He was a very strong person and a very compassionate person (set up many schools for the children in Nepal). RIP.

I think his humility was the most impressive thing about him, sad that he is gone,

Most definitely a great loss; he acheived so much more than just conquering Everest. RIP Sir Ed.

What sad news. He was a great mountaineer and humanitarian.

I myself have always been big on mountaineering and really am amazed at what he did. I know I will never be as good as he was for I know I will never be able to do anything like what he did

On a 2001 trek in the Everest region, we saw first hand how revered this great man was. He opened the eyes of the world to the Khumbu region and brought health care and education. RIP indeed!

The attached image shows Everest, Lhotse and Nuptse from Kala Pattar, just over 18,000'.

Hillary was is one of my heros. What he did for the Nepalese people, building schools, hospitals, landing strips, etc shows what a humanitarian he truely was. On my trip to Nepal, in 2003, to climb Mera and Island Peak, I found out why he loved these people as he did, they would give you the shirt off their backs AND do it with a smile! He will be missed.
