Darren: looks like you got a good one (D-300). I received mine 2 days ago and the autofocus did not work.!!!!!!! This is the second time this year I have purchased a Nikon product that was defective!! The defect in the D-300 was very clear (I mean poorly focused) right out of the box the instant I put on the first lens. The 18-200 VR lens which was on my D2X for the above photo was much less obvious. I went on vacation the day after I received the lens and the result was all my images were out of focus only on the right side of each image. Both products were purchased from B&H. And when you buy from a reputable dealer, you get a replacement without a hassle. The new D-300 arrives tomorrow.... Has anyone else had similar problems with Nikon?

So you've had the bad luck to have one faulty camera and one faulty lens made by Nikon so all of Nikon's quality control is heading south? Is this the same camera company that probably sells millions of cameras and hundreds of thousands of lenses a year?
If Nikon quality control is heading south it would be big, big news, it would be all over the web, it would be mentioned on every photo forum all over the internet.
I think it's more that you've had extremely bad luck than anything else.

Sorry you have had some bad luck. the image I am getting out of my D300 with the Sigma 10-20 and the Nikon 60 2.8 macro and the Nikon 20-35 2.8 lenses are tack sharp and the focusing is very very fast compared to that of the D`70
post a sample image here tomorrow after testing out your new gear...best of luck....

Someone once told me to wait a bit to purchase the next best thing, until they have time to straighten things and get the bugs out.
It just may be the rush to get the latest and greatest.

David,
I think Mark was correct about the bad luck.
I'll shoot you an email.

I'm with Darren, my D300 has been nothing short of flawless.
It's bad luck, and I'm sorry about that, but persevere, because the D300 is well worth it!

Don't get me wrong, I love my Nikon gear and have been shooting with Nikon since 1967. I am aware, my experience is the luck of the draw. After 40 years of flawless Nikon products, my number came up on 2 new products. Could have been shipping issues and rough handling by UPS. One of my points was to be sure you purchase from a reputable dealer and don't be a succor for deals from the less honest Brooklyn discount houses. I am sure the camera I get today will be perfect and I will post images this weekend...

I've owened Nikon gear all my life from four different point and shoots, three DSLR's, and five diferent lens's. I've never had even one little problem with any of them. I did have an Olympus C-2000 and had nothing but problems with it. Nikon rocks IMHO.
