My first ever picture post
Hi

I am new here ..and new to photography ... and only today got a new lens ...Canon 70-300 IS USM ... used with a Canon 350D dSLR (only had the standard 18-55 that came with the camera prior to that)

I was so excited I couldnt wait so I took a few snaps out of my upstairs window through a rain spotted window ... in the most awful dull grey light and still raining .... and within 5 minutes managed to take this

I am sure its not up to your standards ... but Im well impressed with the lens ... and I reckon Im gonna get hooked on this stuff ... I was so excited opening my new lens I cant tell you .. and then even more excited downloading images to the computer to check them out

It was the only half decent one ... the others were pretty naff ... but I was pleased with this one

So for those of you that want the techie info

Shutter 1/60
ISO 1600
F5.6
300mm

Oh I did trim the image a little too

Cheers
Sharon

Hi Sharon
Welcome aboard, A good effort on a dull day,Shooting through windows always takes the edge off of a shot as it has done here, try to open the window if you can,Your shutter speed is low for handholding which again can cause camera shake and a soft looking image
Look forward to more

Dave

Hi Sharon,
Firstly, nice to see an image from you.

Ok, some food for thought.
Even though your camera has IS, i'd probably, look for a higher shutter speed, 1/60'th is very low to begin with, with ISO 1600 it must of been almost black outside.

Hmm looking at your exif, you used flash? It probably wasnt powerful enough to light the subject enough.

Did you shoot jpeg?

Hi

Thanks for your replies .... as you say lots to learn and I will take on board what you say

Yes I shot jpeg .... Dont know the first thing about RAW yet so though for now I would leave that alone :)

Yes I did try with flash ... bit not succesful ..was just trying alll sorts of things

I will try again tomorrow with a higher shutter speed ... and maybe try a lower ISO ... I just knew it was fairly dark so set it at that ... I was just playing really as I didnt have long before all the light went ... which it just about has done now

Its amazing though, I have read books etc .... but it means nothing ..its when you actually start to play around with the settings that you see what effect it has .... learning by doing

Anwyay thanks for the encouragement .... and yes you are quite right Andy .... life will never be the same ... I have been bitten ... I cant wait til tomorrow to try again ... and am irritated that its pouring down and almost dark outside

Might go a walk on the park later, see if I can capture anything in the dark if the rain stops (hmmm I am going to need a lens hood at some point arent I ) ...though I have never taken a shot in the dark so dont know where to begin ...... suck it and see as they say I guess lol

Cheers
Sharon

A nice shot for starters, and looks pretty sharp given the slow shutter speed and the fact you were shooting through a window. Opening the window and resting the camera on a beanbag (or rolled-up towel, etc.) will do wonders for sharpness. Oh, and watch for cutting off your subjects` tails.
Look forward to more!

Welcome Sharon. Not a bad result, I like the way you weren't put off by the poor conditions and still produced an acceptable image. Keep them coming, it's the best way to learn;

Hi Sharon,
Nice first try, especially under the conditions.

The only thing I wll add is.... Keep this image. You will have it to look back on as you improve, which, judging by your infectious start, you will, by leaps and bounds. Well done.
